"Very often... a single word or phrase [from the Bible] may suddenly 'light up' and carry a resonance of meaning which seems especially important. It might be a phrase such as, 'The Lord is my light and my help' ... One can... take that phrase away and ponder on it
meditatively...; but we do not stop at that... We repeat it, aloud or
silently, with intervals of silence in which we let it sink into the
heart and communicate to us something of that mystery of God which is
beyond the power of words or concepts to express... It becomes an axis, a
spiritual centre of calm rootedness around which everything else in our
daily life revolves."
